LAUNCH OF UGGI CONVERSATIONS: Economic sanctions – Who ultimately pays the price?
PANELISTS:
Mike Lewis is a conflict researcher and former United Nations sanctions monitor. Since 2006 he has investigated armed conflicts and conflict financing in over twenty countries from Iraq to Ukraine. In 2010, he served as an expert member of the UN Panel of Experts on Sudan, tasked by the UN Security Council to monitor international sanctions imposed in response to the war in Darfur. From 2012-14 he was policy lead on international tax and development financing for the international NGO federation ActionAid. From 2014-22 he was Lead Investigator and then Head of Enhanced Investigations for Conflict Armament Research, an independent organisation mandated by the European Union to implement the iTrace monitoring programme on illicit arms trafficking in violation of EU arms embargoes, working with export control departments and law enforcement in several EU Member States. He is currently an independent consultant working for several governments and non-governmental organisations on the enforcement and impact of the post-2022 Russia sanctions.
Dennis Pile is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Guyana, where he has been teaching for over 7 years. He is passionate about teaching and researching, and his academic skills have impacted government agenices. He advises the National Insurance Scheme’s statistical department and has worked as a government policy analyst. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Guyana, a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies. and an MBA in Oil and Gas management from the UNICAF University. In 2016. he was part of a small group that wrote on the diversification of the economy of Trinidad and Tobago.
